A student member of the State Board of Directors is expected to participate in all Board business and activities.He/she can play a valuable role by
1.Sharing student perspectives with adults who work on behalf of young people.
2.Providing student views on current issues and concerns.
3.Accepting assignments and following through in a timely manner.
4.Helping other young people to understand the operation and the structure of a large, statewide, nonprofit organization.
5.Informing students at the unit level, whenever possible, of the intent of the State Board of Directors’ activities and actions.
6.Working with adults and students at all levels to increase student participation in PTA at all levels.
1.The student must be a member of a PTA/PTSA in good standing in the State of Hawaii.S/he should be familiar with the Objects of PTA, the Mission of PTA in Hawaii, and basic information.
2.The student should understand that the work of the State Board of Directors is quite different from that of a unit PTA/PTSA.The student should also understand the amount of time and type of involvement required of a member of the State Board of Directors.
3.The student must attend all meetings of the Hawaii State PTSA Board of Directors, as well as outside meetings of the committee/task force(s) on which the student may serve, and understanding that s/he may not leave the premises without the State President’s or designee’s authorization.
4.The student must be at least entering his/her sophomore year in high school.
5.The student should have the support of his/her parents or guardians, teachers, and school principal.
6.The Student Member Application form must be submitted to the State PTA by the deadline indicated.
1.The student must complete the “Hawaii State PTSA Board of Directors Student Member Application Form” (following pages) and submit with the following attachments by April 15th of each calendar year:
(a) Letters of Recommendation from each of the following:
1.School administrator or counselor
2.PTA/PTSA President where a member
3.One other person (i.e. teachers, youth group sponsors, church)
(b) Letter from school principal authorizing release time from class for convention meetings should the appointment be received
(c) Up to two pages detailing the following:
1.Participation in PTA/PTSA
2.Classes expected to enroll in next year
3.Extracurricular activities
4.Description of your employment, if any
5.Reasons for wanting to serve
2.All student applicants will be interviewed by a member of the Board of Directors.
3.Up to seven (7) student members, not to exceed two (2) from one island, will be appointed for a one-year term (July 1 through June 30).
